Yes, every new generation brings very substantial improvements in passive safety. New methods, new materials, new engineering. To an extend, a lot of safety engineering is done to beat various crash testing with minimal cost, which leads to asymmetric results in some cases. However, one cannot deny tremendous overall improvement.
Don't discount active safety improvements, too. Brake Assist, for example is absolutely an enormous safety improvement that makes cars much safer. Other safety technologies are also making a big difference. There are situations when the human mind is just inadequately slow. When my wife was hit head-on at combined 70 mph, she did not even see the other car coming, it happened so fast. An emergency braking system likely would have reduced the severity of that crash significantly.
