depends on what you want... if you get a good rate, it's only a small premium vs buying new + you get to decide to keep it or not at the end (and have a used car at somewhere around the going rate that you know the history of)... of course if the car is unlikely to be a dud in terms of reliability, paying a couple $k premium for the lease may not be so worthwhile...
probably something like a crv is a good bet... not my cup of tea (I have 2 kids also + have zero desire for an SUV, but to each his own), but neighbours have one + it's needed little, it's a cheap basic cuv... unfortunately hondas don't depreciate much... I doubt a new one is <$200/m but maybe there's a good deal out there (as others said, on a financed CPO with full warranty for the term)...
Even with repairs on our Saabs, they are much cheaper to own than any new car... personally I'd fix it + drive it if everything else is working fine... what car can you buy for $2000? For $200/m you can put in a used tranny every year, but you won't have to... never mind the down payment... but I also understand there is value in confidence in driving a newer vehicle...
