but what about a sport-ute? Grand Cherokees, Pathfinders, Explorers are cheap, plentiful and not that horrible. They'd probably be a lot cheaper to run the anything you've mentioned. And I'll tell you a little secret not many people who own them seem to know, if you drive them EXTREMELY gently(dump trucks will blow you away)they can get respectable mileage. I started out getting 15/16 but can get 19/20 in town and 22/23 on the highway. That's better than I was getting with my Subaru. I wouldn't take them much over 70 mph and if you're careful with how much weight you haul in them (especially the Explorer) they aren't total deathtraps. You might even run into the odd Rav4 or CRV that's cheap. Other picks are the Cherokee (not the Grand Cherokee)which is simple, small and relatively lightweight. I drove a 4 cylinder, 5 speed stripper 4 Runner (you can also find similar Pathfinders) a while back that I really liked. Previous gen sport-utes are relatively small by current standards and worth a look if you want a AWD wagon.
