Jeep Liberty and dealer scare tactic? Posted by CBS [Email] (#969) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CBS) on Fri, 2 Dec 2011 15:08:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I get coupons from the local dealer for cheap oil changes for the Liberty (wife has one too). I do most of the work on my Saabs, but with the cheap coupons, it pays to take it to the dealer for oil changes. Anyway, two oil changes ago I brought the wifes Liberty in and during the post oil change "consultation" I was informed that her transfer case seal was leaking and they could do it right then for $300 (and "don't use the 4WD until you get this fixed"). I think this is the seal where the driveshaft goes to the front wheels. I said no, I would take a look at it. So I have a cleanish piece of cardboard under it over many nights and have not spotted a leak. So two months after that (last week) I took it in again for oil change, and though it could have been the particular mechanic(s), but no leaking transfer case seal was spotted this time.
A couple questions. First, I don't think it does, but does the transfer case share fluid with the transmission? There is no sign that the tranny fluid is lowering. Second, would I see leakage under the car as explained above? Third, is there a reason to be concerned about using 4WD?
Interestingly enough, I took my Liberty (not wifes) in for oil change at about the same time and was told I had a bad front "axle seal". Again, no evidence of leakage. Think the dealer is hood-winking me?
