Despite your stated dislike for Asian cars with good press, I'd recommend Subaru. There are many Saab-esque traits to be found, including hatchbacks, quirky but great engineering, all-weather abilities, and safety.
I have a 2010 Impreza 2.5i, and yeah, its a bit boring compared to my 1990 900 Turbo Convertible, of course, but I still like it quite a bit. It's comfortable, nothing has gone wrong in the first 20,000 miles (just turned that tonight actually) and the lease payment is dirt cheap.
My main complaints about my particular Subaru is the soft suspension and the crap-tastic 4-speed autobox. It rides incredibly smooth for a small car, but the body roll in corners sucks. It's two gears and 15% stiffer springs away from being a genuinely brilliant car.
With that being said I've driven a new 2012 Impreza 2.0i (total redesign) and they've improved the handling, and the new CVT far outperforms the tranny in my 2.5i. Fuel economy would be awesome in a new one too. They're worth a look. And if you want fast, you cannot beat a WRX for the money.
In the interest of full disclosure I'll say that I sell Subarus for a living, so I am a bit biased. But they really are great cars. I'd love to sell Saabs, but, you know, I sorta like to eat and pay my rent on time too. So it is what it is.
