Hello Ian, you could make up a new stop with a fully threaded machine screw, 1 or 2 small fender washers on either side of the bracket portion of the unit then some small washers with an OD that's the size of the original stop and of course a nut to hold it all together! The under head length of machine screw should be 7/16" plus the thickness of the first outboard washer(s). The OD of the smaller washers under the nut needs to be .370" so 3/8" would work great, use however many it takes for the attaching nut to be flush with the end of the machine screw! If I remember correctly the hole left from the stop removal is pretty large so with the little finder washers you should be able to position the whole thing the proper distance from the contact point of the units linkage to the distributor which should be .086" (originally .046" plus the extra .040" needed) depending on what initial advance you're running. Once you get this in place pressurize the unit while you're resetting your timing and see what the timing is backed down to, it should be around 10 degrees BTDC regardless of what you set your initial timing to. The guy that worked for SPG9 that dreamed up the harebrained idea to remove the stop eventually got fired because of it and I just walked away from the whole thing! My improved A.I.D.'s use a stronger spring and a simple way to adjust the retard limit, I used my fiancée's early 9000 Carlsson to perfect these things and I've gotten as high as 39mpg in ideal conditions so it really is worthwhile to get these right!
