i think (and thank you all for the replies) i am going to give into the suspicion that my master clutch cyl is failing. there is some moisture on it and paint is peeling so i really should have thought of replacing it along with the other clutch components. Not sure why i thought that with 170K on the clock it would be ok.... bad move. Will order one and will report back once its in.
