Nope, I special ordered it that way... I ordered it very early in the model year. My cousin tried to order one with the same engine and tranny combination a month later and his order was never accepted by the factory, so I suspect that nearly all the left over 1978 Pontiac 400s were used in the 1979 Special Edition models and very few non-special editions Trans Ams were built with that motor and trans. I knew a few guys at school who had T/As with the Oldsmobile 403 engine and automatic transmission (6.6 on the hood scoop rather than T/A 6.6).
I also ordered the WS6 suspension/brake/wheels package which provided 4-wheel discs, stiffer suspension with nylon suspension, and wider wheels. Black exterior with the tan velour interior and screaming chicken on the hood. Power brakes and power steering but no A/C or power windows. No radio either, I ordered the Radio Acceptance package which included the factory wiring harness and bought a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette head unit and put Jensen 6x9 co-axial speakers in the rear package shelf. I bought flat black metal speaker grills and found aftermarket paint that matched the Pontiac interior color. Looked like a factory install.
I also refused to order the color matching seat belts! Since the seat cushion material was a black cloth background with tan velour tufts, the standard and less expensive black seat belts coordinated perfectly.
