I discovered when I was installing my rebuilt 74 engine with my rebuilt starter, which I had acquired earlier, into my 68 that there are two different starters. The rebuilt one was evidently from a Sonett III. It attached to the engine just fine but would hit the bottom of the engine bay before coming to rest on the motor mounts. The solenoid was rotated about 30 degrees farther than my original starter. This would explain why some of you have no problem with using a socket; the solenoid is not in line with the nut. I always had the same problem which may explain why I had a ground down 14 mm box end wrench lying around for years. It's very possible that if I wasn't using the shorter mounts it would have fit. In this case, either starter will fit in either car. I had my original starter rebuilt, replaced the stud and made sure it did not stick out much beyond the nut. I just checked and it looks like I'm still going to need a slightly flattened box end.
