I recenty condemned my green sonett for lack of working transmission. The interesting thing is, I never pulled out my plastic freewheel engagement cam thingee to even take a look. For some reason I was worried, I really don't know why.
At any rate, the green sonett was jumping out of drive. When this happened, I'd pretty much have to come to a complete stop and retry in first. It made me very scared, for my own mobility as well as the transmission. I loosened the freewheel cam and engaged the freewheel. I drove around 'in freewheel' for a while, and decided that the car acted exactly the same. It would sort of give up the ghost and disengage, then freewheel, and maybe make a lot of noise. I 'locked out' the freewheel again.
At any rate, I sort of bought another sonett. :) I stripped the MSS exhaust from the green and put it on the orange. Had to deal with the 96 header that was on the orange car. Tonight I put that header back on the green car, but only after I looked at one thing...
I had a spare plastic piece that came with the orange car. I forgot to bring it with me to the green car, which isn't with me in the city due to it's imobilized state... Having looked at the piece, I was curious. I pulled out my plastic piece...
Okay... yes, let's see here... cracked on the sleeve for the brass rod... generally distorted...
I coultn't believe myself. Anyway, I put that sucker back in there and really rotated it CCW, with no bolt securing it to the trans. It almost moved enough to allow me to put the bolt on the Right Edge of the plastic piece... I shimmed it all in there. It was an ugly temporary fix, but I figured I really should test the car. I put the 96 header back onto the engine as it's only exhaust system, what a backbreaker. I can't believe that horrible design... the MSS header is such a thing of beauty next to that infernal 96 header, but I digress...
I went for a drive, and it turns out that my green '73 sonett has a purring motor, and a smooth transmission... whatever howling I was hearing in fourth is gone (wierd, I guess) and it works great! I'm guessing the freewheel will actually work (maybe) once I get a proper plastic piece in there. I'm still trying to kick myself in my own backside.
Anyway, this is all some sort of bizarre pennance, I suppose. I'm getting really good at exhaust work on a sonett III. :)

PS anyone have that part number that I mentioned in the subject? The plastic deal that is so terribly important to proper drive... Truly, the local dealer parts guy did not have a clue what I was talking about. I was thinking that if I could spring a part number on them, I'd get some better results. Maybe the proper name for that part would help as well, I guess. :)
Thanks again
