No disrespect to Mr. Ashcraft either, who I have never met.
I do know two things: A couple of years ago I disassembled a pile 'o transmissions that I had amassed- well over a dozen of them. Every one had loose shaft nuts. Except the two in which someone had WELDED the shaft nuts to the shaft in an attempt to fix the problem once and for all.
And the other Jack, Jack Lawrence, torques those nuts, esp the pinion, to way over the book number. Jack L knows a few things about VSaab gearboxes.
My advice is this: if you have the gearbox out, you owe it to yourself to removed the covers and check things out (you don't need any gaskets!). I'd re-torque those nuts and replace the locking mechanism on the pinion shaft. If you have to do any more than that, it requires special tools and optimally, the factory jig. In that case, if the gearbox needs work, then consider sending it out to a specialist.
