I’ve been a long time lurker on this site and have benefited much from the collective wisdom of the members of this group over the eight-year period that I’ve owned my 73 Sonett. After trying for years to stop a hot starting problem by doing the usual fixes, I thought I would finally join this site and post to see if there are any ideas I haven’t yet tried.
1. 1973 Sonett, 38K miles in very good condition, starts great cold, runs fine, never stalls. When up to full temperature, if the car is turned off, it generally won’t start without waiting for maybe 20-25 minutes, then it will start like a new Honda. Sometimes it will start right away and sometimes it won’t, but it seems to be worse with warm weather. I live in the San Diego area, and we are having a warm winter (75-80 degrees), so this is happening now.
2. Compression is good – 145-150 lbs. on all cylinders. Always starts easily with a push start. Accelerator pump always pumps a good stream warm or cold. When trying to hot start, it usually turns over without any hint of starting, but then sometimes it just suddenly catches and runs totally normally.
3. Here’s what’s been done: a) phenolic spacer added; b) electric fuel pump added as an auxiliary pump in series with the mechanical pump using a push to run button, mechanical pump remains the main pump in use; c) Petronix unit, new ignition wires, plugs, and distributor cap; d) new Bosch blue coil; e) new starter; f) rebuilt Fomoco carb ; g)timing set, valve clearance set; h)new battery.
I’ve always thought that the ease of push starting was pointing to ignition as the cause, but I’ve replaced everything. I’ve also tried starting it with jumper cables from another idling car to add current to the system and while that spins the starter a little faster, it doesn’t seem to change the hot starting problem.
I think I’ve tried about all typical fixes, and sometimes they seem to work, but I just can’t put this to bed. Any ideas are very welcomed and appreciated.
