Eric
Thanks for the excellent advice. While following your suggestions, I may have stumbled on a solution - albeit one that may cause other problems. I was going down your list step by step and as I was getting ready to pull the cover off the carb, for some unknown reason I tried plugging up the PCV valve going into the intake manifold. Bingo, it started right up. I'm going to run it more, and cycle cold and hot again with and without the PCV plugged to see if the starting was just a coincidence (that wouldn't be the first time). The PCV valve is quite open during starting, that's a pretty big vacuum leak during a critical time for ignition. That makes some sense to me.
Plugging the PCV may cause other problems. The PCV valve performs a needed function - to remove crankcase gasses. Plus, with the PCV valve plugged up, perhaps the jetting will be off - although it seems to run quite nicely. And right now it seems to start nearly as good hot as cold and it never did that.
I'll report further.
