I asked my machine shop in Forest Grove, Oregon, about this when leaded fuel was taken off the market. (I'm also driving a '72 dodge pickup truck w/ cast-iron heads and no hardened valve seats). The shop owner told me that he had gone to a seminar where this problem was discussed and the engineers told them that valve seats that have been using leaded gas have a very thin hardened surface on them (from the lead). As long as that hardened surface has not been disturbed (like with a valve job) the car should be able to be driven for quite a while before the valves will fail. When it finally becomes necessary, V-4 heads can be rebuilt using the hardened seats and valves from a V-6 Capri engine. I was quoted $300 for installing hardened seats in two V-8 heads from the 318CI Dodge. That is in addition to the cost of a regular valve job. Instead I found a later engine with hardened seats and rebuilt that engine. Turned out that someone had replaced the hardened seats in those heads and the exhaust seats weren't done right, so I still had to replace them, but the head was already machined for them so it wasn't quite as expensive.
