My personal opinion is that it's not as important as with some marques. Both my Sonett's were painted with non-Saab colors (one red, one yellow) because that's what I wanted and I don't think it hurts the value. If you look at the Sonett colors from back then, many are hard to like. My first Sonett came to me as a two-tone, with a lemon yellow nose and the rest buzzard puke green. That's the one I painted red.
With that said, I don't think you want to stray too far from the basic colors of cars from that era. I recently saw a very nice gray Sonett for sale, painted with a color similar to my wife's Honda. I thought it was done well, but it somehow didn't look quite right and I'm sure it hurt its value a bit.
