Clutch judder that wasn't Posted by Craig K [Email] (#1834) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Craig K) on Fri, 10 Jul 2015 15:26:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 68 has had what I thought was a clutch judder problem since I put a rebuilt 1700 engine and all new clutch parts in back in 07. It also had a problem staying 4th gear. I stopped driving it about 4 years ago and then yanked the drivtrain last year. I replaced the pilot bushing and the clutch lever with a spare with less wear. Also had Jack Lawrence make the needed change and recondition of the clutch disk. With it out and running it through the gears I discovered I had mixed up the bolts and used one that was too long where the bellhousing connected to the tranny next to the cover plate. It was keeping the gear selector lever from fully engaging 4th. One problem solved. After replacing the drivetrain the judder problem remained. Then about 6 months ago I started having a problem with the clutch not totally disengaging. When starting the car in gear and clutch pedal completely down the car would begin to creep forward. Reverse was the only one that was extremely hard to get into. Once moving forward it shifted fine but it was engaging very quickly. Back to the judder(trying to keep it in sequence). About 2 months ago I started hearing a knocking noise and traced it to where the inner drive axle connects to the outer axle on the passenger side. I found several posts here about this causing vibration and hoped it might have something to do with my judder problem. I seperated and rotated the 2 parts of the drive axle (about 10 min witha small sledge)from a driver side spare I had so as to give it all new wear surfaces. Replaced the driver with drivetrain in which was also suggested in post on this board. The result was no knocking noise and and about an 80% improvement of the judder problem. Last week I did the other side and the problem is almost completly gone. It was more difficult getting the driver side drive axle out. Had to loosen motor from mounts and shift engine over about a half inch witha small hydraulic jack. As far as the engagement problem goes, I did try a new master about 2 months ago. Iv'e gone through at least 2 bottles of fluid bleeding the slave useing every method I could read about including the pressure bleed with a bycicle pump. No change. This morning I took a .065 (1/16") washer, grinded it to the shape of the base of the slave and used it to push the slave closer to the clutch. This may be just a bandaid fix but it has not shifter this well in 8 years. This is kinda long but it addresses issues that other Saabers had that I ran accross here while trying to find answers to mine. It also veryfies solutions that others have suggested.
