Another thing to try is adjusting the steering column. I've heard Bruce Turk mention that this solved some hard shifting issues. Problem is that the adjustments are hard to reach.
I had a judder problem with a Sonett until I pulled the engine then swapped the drivers, cleaned up the flywheel, rebuilt the worn throwout, and replaced the pilot bushing. When the transmission was pulled away, little pieces of pilot bushing fell off the shaft. I looked into the hole and saw that the pressure plate was way off of center. Did someone in the past not use an alignment tool? Did that destroy the pilot bushing? Probably.
