Hello. In short, no a c900 starter will NOT work in a V4. the ALTERNATORS from the early c900's will work in a V4, many of us have done this.
the starter for the V4 is a FORD part. there were 2 different starters: one for the early 1500 engine, and one for the later 1700. the difference was the latter was a larger diameter.
Those of us who use the low profile engine mounts, use the earlier starter (smaller circumference).
If you search the "Vintage Models" thread using the "Bosch starter" you will find some good info.
RockAuto-dot-com has a good listing for parts interchange, along with the vintage SAAB websites.
Basically the earlier V4 starter is BOSCH 0 001 208 029
Later V4 starter is BOSCH 0 001 311 023
RockAuto also lists a starter for a, believe it or not, 1997-2001 Honda Civic that will fit in a V4... haven't tried this.
Any good auto electrical alternator/starter shop should have an old paper BOSCH catalog to help you out...
Hope this gets you going.
V/R,
Mike
