I replaced my hoses a few years ago. Mine is a 68 so I'm not sure how similar that metal tray is. If I had replaced it with the original type of hose I could see how it would have been problematic without removing the tray or dash. I found a length of hose I saved from an old vacuum that had the perfect inside diameter. Being a lot more flexible than the original hose made the job very doable without removing anything. Not sure if hot air running through plastic hose would cause it to deteriorate or force pcb type polutants into the cabin but I live in the Phoenix area so it's not much of an issue.
