If you do decide to put a jack under the motor and remove the motor mount, you can do it two ways (at least). I've use a 2x6 under the motor itself on the oil pan. They're quite strong and remember, the other mount (as well as the rear one) are still there. The other way is to go jack up against the transmission case near the drain plug. Either will work. I guess I prefer the former.
Or as Jim says, work from the bottom and you won't have to remove anything (except maybe a little skin from your hand).
