Hi,
As the current owner of more than a half a dozen vintage Saabs, headlight wiring problems with the Sonett III's is high on the list of problems. As in your case, both of my Sonett III's came with messed up headlight wiring in which previous owners had decided to fool around with. With one case, the disconnect plugs were troublesome and were bypassed using solid core house wiring. And in the other, it was the relays that were incorrectly rewired so they were on all the time, draining the battery overnight.
I find that Jack Ashcraft's book on Saab Electrics is MOST helpful. Jack has an entire chapter on SIII headlights in which he has redrawn all the connections in a way that is understandable and helpful for troubleshooting. Other chapters go through each of the electric systems in a similar fashion- windshield wipers, heater, tail lights, etc. To me, it is well worth the $70 or so he charges for it.
