I think we all understand that the bumpers are purely cosmetic, right? I mean the early Sonett bumpers offer little protection if any. Recall that in '73/'74 the ugly big bumpers were used to meet 5 mph US requirements that the early ones couldn't meet.
This may sound silly... but could you make something out of wood? Seal it, prime it, and paint it black. Attachment would be similar to the original.
Just an idea.

PS- I removed the big front bumper in my '74 (because a dog chewed up half of it) and replaced it with some custom 2" steel tubing. The car has been to a couple of Saab meets and I get positive comments. It bolts to the same mounting rails the old big bumper used. You don't have that option...
