Even if you have a lot of experience on other cars, the Lockheed caliper used on the Sonett (and late 95/96) is just weird enough to throw ya. All that single-piston, pivotin', slidin' action makes it a bit odd...
Despite having done a lot on these specific calipers, I still goof occasionally -- last spring when I put in new pads, I had a similar problem with the right-side ones not wanting to stay in. Turned out I had not gotten the pad seated correctly in the caliper -- LOOKED like it was right, but wasn't, and as a result when I'd hit the brake the turning action of the rotor would pull the pads right out through the front of the caliper.
Cleaning all the goop off the caliper body makes it easier to be sure you've got it back together correctly, and so does staring hard at a correct one to compare with the one you've just done...
