I had a bent backing plate on the right rear on my '67 96 V-4. I never could imagine how it could have ever been hit in such away as to bend the plate at the point of the wheel cylinder opening, but that's where the deformity was. I don't remember ever having the shoes hit the drum because of it, but I always had trouble bleeding all of the air out of that wheel cylinder becasue the shoes were misaligned and cocked the piston in the cylinder.
It sounds to me like the spot that is hitting could be scraping the side of the shoe. That's the only way I could see metal to metal contact on new shoes. One thing that I do when installing brake shoes and pads is to look at the wear pattern on the old set and put a tiny dab of Moly grease on the places that the new ones will touch metal. That will help lube any vibration points. Be very careful not to get any grease on the frictoin surfaces of the shoe or the drum. Is there any wear point on the original shoes?
As for grinding a taper on the edge of the shoes, I have never found that to be necessary wen replacing shoes.
The early 96 never gave me any problem bleeding the clutch hydraulics, but the system after '69, when they changed the master cylinder and moved it, seems to have a spot in the line that traps an air bubble. The system needs to be pressure bled. The 99s and 900s have the same problem.
