Eric,
I have a '69 Sonett II (V4), and I love it. The rear 'door hatch' on the II is actually somewhat functional, though you have to do some funky manuevering to get the trunk full. I often find it easier to put stuff in the trunk by going through the roll-bar from inside. I definitely like the smoother look of the II's over the III. The BIGGEST benefit to the II is the tilt forward hood. It makes working on anything in the engine soooo much easier. The 'on-the-column' shifter is so unique, it is actually a 'plus' in my book.
The performance differences between the two is debateable, and you can always drop a 1700cc engine in a II if you really want to. The II-V4's are lighter than the III's (1598lbs for the II-V4 vs. 1900lbs for the III) which gives the II-V4 actually a faster 0-60 time, supposedly. (300 lbs is alot of weight.)
Check out http://www.saabregistret.se/data/utvsone.htm
for detailed spec comparisons between Sonett models and year differences..
I'd have to say the strongest "plus" for the III's is that there made 5 times as many IIIs than V4s. Finding the odd interior piece, hood, etc, can be really tough if you ever need to replace those type of items.
I may be biased, but I'd say go for the V4 if you want more of a head-turner...
