Need some advice....got some funky noise.

Damned if my luck isn't the worst around. I just took my two V4s to have some new tires put on for winter. My friend was driving my sonett III. When I picked the car up from the shop she sounded real bad. She idles smooth and all and doesn't seem to have lost any power or what have you but there is a low rumble coming from the engine. I first thought it was an exhaust leak but don't think that anymore. My water pump started leaking this week so I figured it had simply gone bad...I detatched the v-belt and the sound remains.
Anyway, I suppose I'm in for a rebuild anyway, but I use this car to go everywhere for the moment...is there anything anyone would suggest I check before diving in here? I fear the balance shaft is bad now but not because I have any real Idea as to what that would sound like, ony because folks have mentioned that they go bad...that's all.
Anyhow, any help would be greatly appreciated.
