I'd think a car cover would be a good idea, as it would keep melt from seeping into the interior. To keep the rust from getting worse, you could just smear the problem areas with petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaseline) and/or spray with WD-40. The petroleum jelly attracts dirt and is hard to get off in the spring, but it repels moisture and inhibits rust. WD-40 isn't as repellent but is easier to apply.

This is going to horrify the purists, but one thing I've used successfully for quick and dirty hole repairs is Great Stuff, a spray-in expanding foam. It fills up voids, dries rigid, and mice don't like to eat it. Case in point: when I first got my Sonett and didn't have time to start fixing the rockers right away, I sprayed Great Stuff through the rust hole in one end plate, and left the other end plate alone. Several months later, when I had time to work on the end plates, the side I had 'foamed' was nice and dry inside -- the Great Stuff had expanded out through the hole and made a solid plug that kept moisture out. Once I had cut away the rusted area of the end plate, all I had to do was break up the foam with a big screwdriver and pull it out in chunks. The other side, the one I hadn't foamed, had gotten more moisture inside and was rusted much worse.

One warning about this stuff: if you spray it into a closed cavity (e.g. rocker) make sure you leave room for it to expand. It builds up a lot of pressure as it expands and can bulge out the metal if it doesn't have anyplace else to go.
