I replaced the FoMoCo on my '68 Deluxe about 6 weeks ago with the Weber 34ICH. And put one on my '73 Sonett just last week.
It is indeed a bolt on carb for the VSaab. There are some things to know and some issues that you MAY have to deal with, depending on your car.
- Vacuum advance line: the Weber has a nice small fitting for the vacuum advance that ties to your distributor advance unit.
- Intermediate plate: this has two vacuum fittings, one for the PCV valve and the other for the brake booster (if you car is so equipped- Sonetts have this fitting blocked). There MAY be an interference between the PCV valve and the carb, depending on which plate you have. It can be solved by moving the PCV valve to the intake manifold (requires drilling and tapping a hole in #3 runner). You'll have to plug the vacuum advance fitting on the intermediate plate, as the Weber already has one.
- Thermostat cover: the front of the carb may interfere with the brass water connection that screws into the thermostat cover. There are at least three types of water connections and you may have to turn things around and reroute your water lines a bit to make it fit.
- Choke: best place on a 96 is an existing hole on the left side of the steering column that has a rubber plug. A Sonett doesn't have that, so I drilled a hole in the left side of the dash. It has to be on the left because you turn the key with your right hand.
- Jets: make sure you have the right jets. I recently posted the jetting normally used for the 34ICH on a stock motor. Overbore, big valves, cam, etc will require changes.
- Air cleaner: you can kinda adapt the Sonett or 96/95 air cleaner to work, but it's a little hokey. I'm looking at a nice K&N low profile filter that I THINK will fit under the Sonett hood. Haven't ordered it yet. Note that the Weber comes with a 2.25" ring on the throat. You can get an air cleaner to fit this. Pop off the ring and the actual throat is a tad over 2". So you have a choice.
Ashcraft sells a nice book on the 34ICH giving diagrams, pictures and everything you need to know about how to install it and all the variables you might run into... well worth the price!

PS- I'm thrilled with the carb on my 96. Took it on a 700 mile round trip and got 33 MPG. Car idles smooth as silk and has improved acceleration. The Sonett is running well, but has not been road tested.
