Rick,

Have the dampener (also called harmonic balancer on US autos) checked for
wear.  This will cause the symtoms that you describe that aren't fixed by any
amount of work on belts, pulleys, alternators, A/C compressor clutches.  This
is a wear item, but lasts a long time before it goes, so does not come to mind
immediately.
