I know this shop is already listed but I wanted to add my praise (and update the
listing with their Website and email address.)

My daughter attends school in Albany and had a problem with her Saab.  She was treated quite well at Capital Mechanics - no condesending treatment, plus fair and honest appraisal of the work needed.  She will definitely use Capital Mechanics for all of her car needs in the Tri-cities area!

Thanks again Mike!

Capitol Mechanics has been in business for over 10 years and are a true "full
service" car care stop. I have experienced excellent results ranging from
routine maintenance to complicated repairs and diagnostics - and even
bodywork that comes out perfect. They also offer a 6 page report for those
people looking to acquire a "previously owned" vehicle that gives a full
snapshot of overall vehicle condition. I have owned a 99, many 900's, a 9000
Turbo, and now have a 9-3 SE - and all have enjoyed the service provided by
the Capitol Mechanics team.

I always had great service here. My car was pampered in the hands of
GFS. You can go to the dealership and pay almost $100 dollars an hour
for labor or you can pay a reasonalbe price for qualified work and 30+
years of experience. Not even the Saab dealership can claim that. I
have had to many bad experiences with the dealership. One recently
where my catalytic converter went bad. My check engine light came on
and I brought it to GFS. They informed me of a federal instated warranty
for 80,000 miles or 8 years on catalytic converters. They even tried to
take the car to the dealership for me and have it replaced. The
dealership refused and tried to charge them $850 dollars for the part
without labor. I then had to take it in for service myself and was again
told that the warranty did not apply. GFS gave me a copy of the warranty
and I called Saab USA from the dealership and informed them of my
dissatisfaction. The dealership ended up performing the warranty work and
then told me that I need about $1000 of additional work. I went back to
GFS where they performed a through inspection of my car paying specific
attention to the items listed by the dealer and found nothing close to
what they had indicated. Needless to say my car has been running like a
fine swiss watch and I saved at least $1850 thanks to GFS. If you own a
Saab or Volvo, this is the place to go if you want reliable work at a fair
price.

These guys just fixed my car and I was so happy with them that
I told them I was going on the internet to post. I had not previously
changed my oil very often and ended up with a hole in the side of my
engine. They installed an engine for ~$3000 less than I could find
anywhere.  They also cleaned my car and vacuumed it for free. I will
definitely be taking my car back there and when I go to get a new Saab
it will be from them!

Great shop specialized for Saab's run by a guy named Paul. We had a
terrible wobble and rattling sound with our 1999 9-3 and two mechanics
told us the transmission needed to be pulled and taken apart to find the
$problem$. Paul quickly dismissed that and found the vibration was actually
the inner axle and the rattle was one of the rear brakes (wrong pad had been
installed previously).

He also took care of a faulty vacuum hose and busted front struts promptly
and at a very reasonable price (all of this for considerably less than taking
apart the tranny!).

The car runs like new now, Star Motors is worth seeking out (and you might
have to seek, the shop isn't visible from the road, it's hidden behind a deli).
Submitted by Sean Sheridan

Star Motors is run by a man named Paul. When a family friend of
mine raced 2-stroke Saabs back in the 70's, Paul was his mechanic. He
has been working on Saabs professionally for approximately 35 years.
Anyone who has ever had his Saab serviced at Star can tell you that
Paul's reputation precedes him. Paul's knowledge of Saabs is so
unrivaled that many of the other mechanics in the area, and even the
nearby Saab dealership/service center send their most complicated jobs
his way. Not too long ago I noticed my 900T popping out of reverse
whenever I was going uphill. I was hesitant to hear the estimate,
knowing full well that the repair would require removing the
transmission. To my amazement, Paul told me that having encountered this
problem several times in the past, he developed his own technique for
making this repair, using customized tools, which did not require the
transmission to be removed. Employing his technique greatly reduced the
cost to me. I recommend Star Motors for any Saab owner in the North
Shore Suffolk County area.

This is another paean to Roland, who distinguishes himself not
only because he seems like a good mechanic but because he is honorable.
A pleasure to give business to someone who has sound ethics AND fixes my
car. If I ever buy another Saab it will be so I don't have to find a new
mechanic.
Submitted by Josh Lerman

Roland is a very nice man HOWEVER, his experience is limited
(as another person mentioned above).  after waiting almost 3 weeks for
an appointment to fix my convertible top, he told me that the problem
was the computer (about a $1000 repair), but, it just didn't sound right
to me since nothing else the computer controlled was presenting a
problem.  i asked are you sure.  he said 100%.

i saw someone from a saab dealership who diagnosed and fixed the problem
(a wiring problem and adjustments) for a few hundred bucks and had the
car back the next day.  roland tends to take the "tech 2" readings as
gospel without the experience to interpret them and come up with
solutions which make more sense than what the computer spits out.

i would have no problem recommending him for minor or typical work, but,
the complex stuff, i think, still requires more experience.

I have been driving Saabs since 1989. Palmer was the A-1
mechanic who introduced me to Roland a few years ago. Roland gave me the
same service I got from Palmer, dealer service but not dealer price. I
recommend Roland for fast, quality and trust-worthy service. A young but
experienced mechanic. If you are in NY/NJ/CT then you will hear about
Roland.

Please note that Roland has moved the shop to 1013 Atlantic
(off Classon), which is not too far from the Pacific shop.

I have been a customer of Swedish since 2000. I found Roland on this
site and was hesitant because of the first post that claimed he was
"young".  At the time I was living in Westchester and was driving a 1998
900SE Turbo.  I bought the car used from a NJ Dealer of "questionable
integrity" - they never told me the car was 6 feet under water.
Needless to say, Roland was always on point and far more reasonable in
price than the dealer. When I totaled the car last year, I stayed
loyal to Saab largely because I knew I had a SAAB mechanic I could
trust.

I have lived in Rockland county for 2 years but would never think of
having anyone else work on my car. Roland is the man!!!

Swedish Pro has moved, and Palmer has left the shop in the hands of his
colleague, Roland. My comment on the change is that Roland's capable, but
he's young, and doesn't have nearly the depth of experience that Palmer
does. If you're in the area and need competent basic service at reasonable
rates, I'd recommend him. If you're looking at more complex work...caveat
emptor.

Roland has been trained well by Palmer. Good work at decent prices.

We have a '88 Saab 900 S that had been badly maintained by its previous
owner (a lot of electric faults, non O.E.M. parts, etc.).  When we first
bought it I wanted it checked out by a mechanic and consulted numerous
sites on the Web looking for a recommended mechanic in New York or
Brooklyn. We went to three and found them all unsatisfactory, to say the
least.  Finally I found a review here recommending a garage "Swedish Pro"
and called. It turns out the original mechanic had left to set up a garage
in Atlanta but his assistant, Roland, was now running the place, and was
willing to work on the car. Three visits later (including shock
replacement, heat shield replacement, fuel system tune up) I can't
recommend Roland/Swedish Pro more highly.  Each time he's done the work
quickly and well.  He goes out of his way to explain the problems and
solutions to making these quirky cars run well. His prices are very
reasonable and he seems to know everything about Saabs. He does not work on
any other car, and seems to have Saabs lined up around the block to repair.
If you live in New York or Brooklyn I suggest you give him a call, make an
appointment, and check him out.

A+++!!! I can't begin to say enough good things about Roland at Swedish Saab
Service in Brooklyn. FAB-U-LOUS! Roland is a textbook example of everything a
GREAT mechanic should be, honest and reliable, knowledgeable and reasonable.
After seeing the comments on this very board about this shop, I took my newly
acquired '91 9000S to Roland for a checkup. I knew beforehand it needed a new
belt, and had been told by another shop that a crank pulley and tensioner was
needed. The other shop quoted me what I thought was a pretty high price, but
then again, I'm new to Saab. But I held out for Roland, since he was the
celebrated specialist. Within 30 seconds of seeing the car, Roland told me I
did *not* need a new tensioner, and the other items would only require no
more than 2 hours labor (that included the checkup--and even a surprise
engine cleaning he gave me!). Bottom line, he was courteous, pleasant, took
time to explain everything to me in plain language, and the PRICE WAS RIGHT!
Wow---he saved me several hundred dollars! So folks, if you're looking for a
highly positive experience in finding a new mechanic for yourself---Roland is
your man, Swedish Saab is your place!

Submitted by Zievfret Heiligenstein
Swedish Saab Service is a one-man shop run by a guy named Roland. I bought a
1990 900 convertible from him about 3 weeks ago. At the time, he and I
noticed a few minor details that needed to be fixed (boost gauge, battery
shield, weather-stripping, etc.). Despite my having haggled him down on the
price of the car, Roland went above and beyond the call of duty to fix
*everything* that could be found to be done to the car, down to replacing the
bulbs in the ashtray and glove compartment. When I subsequently discovered
that it needed a couple of more things done, he did them for the cost of the
parts. I couldn't ask for a more fair person to buy a car from.

I went to Swedish Saab Service after reading the reviews from
this sight. I have been using my business partner's 900SE and thought to
give it a tune up before returning it to him. I have never had such a
pleasant experience with a mechanic. Not only did Roland fix everything
I listed, but two additional problems I had forgot to mention. I believe
Roland is an example of a true specialist. He only works on Saabs and he
takes pride in his work. If you live in the five boroughs, for quality
and cost, he's the one.
