SAAB ANNOUNCES SPECIAL PERFORMANCE GROUP FOR TURBO MODEL

ORANGE, Conn. --- A limited production, sports edition of the Saab 900 Turbo is now 'wailable through dealers for the Swedish-made Saab cars, according to Sten Selling, SaabScania of America vice president, sales and marketing.

Called Special Performance Group, this new edition Saab adds improved handling and aerodynamics to the 1985 Turbo.

Only 2,000 Turbos with the Special Performance Group will be offered during the 1985 model year, according to Mr. Selling.

"Saab cars have always been performance-oriented and the Saab Turbo is among the fastest sedans anywhere," he said. "But a few of our Turbo customers asked us for more. This new, limited edition is for them."

All Saab Turbos this year are powered by a new 16-valve, double overhead cam, third generation turbocharged engine with intercooler and electronic fuel injection. The Saab Turbo's top speed, with its 160 horsepower, is about 130 miles per hour. It accelerates from rest to 60 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds.

The Special Performance Group will be available on 3-door

Turbos, and black is the only color offered. The body has a sportier look with aerodynamic side skirts that form a continuous line along the lower body. The net result is improved aerodynamics and better high-speed stability.

To handle the increased performance, the Special Performance Group includes Pirelli P6 tires with a V" rating for sustained cruising speeds of more than 130 miles per hour. The tires are mounted on aerodynamic three-spoke aluminum wheels.

Anti-sway bars front and rear give the car improved handling by balancing the lateral forces on all four tires. During high-speed cornering, none of the tires carries an unnecessarily high load and the useful life of the V-rated tires is therefore extended. The gas-filled shock absorbers are tuned to work with the anti-sway bars.

Completing the Special Performance Group package are leather upholstery, fog lights and electric sunroof. The side moldings and all badges except the Saab logos are removed from the exterior of the car for a smooth, clean look.

In view of the type of driver that Saab expects for the Special Performance Group, this edition of the Saab Turbo will not be offered with automatic transmission.

The Special Performance Group carries a suggested price of $2,860 over the price of a 1985, 3-door Saab Turbo.

now have a front spoiler for improved high-speed stability. The three-door Turbo is equipped with a rear spoiler, which contributes to aerodynamics and helps keep the rear hatchback window free of road dirt.

In addition to importing Saab cars, Saab-Scania of America manufactures Scania transit buses in a plant in Orange, Connecticut. Saab-Scania of America is a unit of Saab-Scania AB, the Swedish transportation equipment group.
