Saabworks Rally Team completes the Maine Forest Rally, despite broken gearbox

Rumford, ME - Hailing from the woods of Northwestern Connecticut near the legendary Lime Rock Park raceway, the Saabworks Rally Team completed the Maine Forest Rally this past weekend, despite a failing gearbox.

The Maine Forest Rally was the debut for the Saabworks prepared 1985 Saab 900 turbo at a major rally. The weekend was divided into two Club Rallies; the Seven Islands ClubRally taking place on Friday, July 27; and the Mead ClubRally, which was run on Saturday, July 28 in Rumford, Maine.

The Saturday's racing proved to be fast and fun for the beginning team. "Some of the roads we drove on at 60 miles per hour would have been difficult to even walk on." said Ethan Maass, the co-driver and navigator for the team. "That's how rough and rocky it was." Team driver James Fox's smooth and consistent piloting netted the team a 17th overall position out of 80 cars as well as 3rd in Group 5 which consists of high-powered, two-wheel drive vehicles..

The 8th and final leg of the competition served up a large blow to the underside of the car, which cracked the gearbox. The car continued to run competitively to the end of the rally when the gearbox seized, having lost all of its gear oil.

The Saabworks Rally Team plans to head back to the garage to replace the destroyed gearbox, hopefully in time for the Rally New York, on September 13th in Andes, NY.

SCCA ProRally is often described as "Real cars, on real roads, going real fast." While rally cars must remain licensed and registered for street use, they also must be able to withstand incredible punishment on rough forest roads at racing speeds, under adverse weather conditions. Rally teams race against the clock on closed roads.
