MotoRad Expansion Tank Cap Died Posted by EGD [Email] (#663) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EGD) on Mon, 24 Nov 2014 08:05:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2010 9-3 with 89K miles. Drove to the mountains north of LA yesterday for an afternoon of sun and fun and when we got to Wrightwood (about 6500' altitude), my kids noticed what a sweet smell there was about the town. Turned out to be the sweet smell of my coolant as it boiled over and polluted the streets.
Apparently, the expansion tank cap failed and the tank drained out. The cap was an aftermarket MotoRad. I had a spring and what's left of the cap in the tank. To get off the mountain, I filled the tank with DI water as no garages seemed to be open, reinstalled the broken cap (now without any ability to control pressure), and carefully drove home.
Bought an aftermarket cap at AutoZone last night -- also a MotoRad -- that should have fit according to their fitment guide but does not so I'm off to the local GM dealer now to see if they have what I need. Will also be fishing out the remnants of the cap in the expansion tank I can find and then probably do a flush of the system later this week.
