Just wanted to give an update to anyone who may have this issue in the future.
It ended up being the contact in the driver's side rear most side glass panel in the SportCombi (for glass break detection).
The alarm LED will flash 3 times per second for 11 seconds if the glass break detection is faulty, even though the manual makes no mention of this. To test, I placed a small piece of folded up aluminum foil on the driver's side first/forward contact on that rear most side window across the two terminals on the 9v battery style connector (without disconnecting it, just wedged it in place). Instantly, the alarm would properly arm and the LED would indicate solid red upon arming (normal) and the
"theft protection failure" message on the SID went away. This is a simple and easy way to test without having to disconnect the 9v battery style connector as the entire glass break detection loop coating in the glass appears to be very fragile.
Since this is a 2006, I do not think there is anyway to disable the rear glass protection through the SID (as you can apparently on later models) so the solution here is to connect a wire across the two terminals on the 9v battery style connector effectively bypassing the entire rear glass break protection loop. It is either that or a new window.
