XWD rear springs with Bilstein HD (B6) Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Wed, 20 Jan 2016 12:07:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
One the of the Nivomat rear shock absorber died last week, big oil puddle in the driveway and the infamous knocking sound from the wheel well. Dealer wants 1035$CDN for a new one, which I can find at 500$US (650$CDN) in the USA. No way I'll pay that amount for a shock that didn't last more than 35 000 miles. Car is at 108 000 km (67 500 miles) and it is the second set of Nivomats.
So I've installed Bilstein HD (B6) and now the car is about 20 mm lower than stock. I've seen a few posts on the other forums where some folks suggest to install custom coil springs. The consensus to keep the car height stock is to use a 12 in x 2.5 in spring with 300 lb/in. In addition, one must use a stock spacer from a Buick Lacrosse (13322645, 16$CDN) on both end of the springs.
With that setup, the car will be back at 380 mm (wheel center to fender lip) like stock.
My question concerns the fact my car is a SportCombi, while the 300 lbs spring is for a sedan. Should I order 325 lbs springs to cover the added weight ? Or should I go to 275 lbs as this car is a daily driver, and comfort is the main goal, not performance. Montreal roads are absolutely terrible, especially in winter...
What would you do ?
