There's 1 big circuit board for all the gauges in the whole cluster. The motors are soldered onto that, in fact the stepper motors seem identical for all the 5 gauges. I've read how common it is for them to lose their ability to find their "zero" position on a wide range of GM cars & trucks.
I'm probably going to get mine rebuilt next time I go on a trip & the car will be parked for a week anyway.
Justin, what do you think of BBA's work? Or other places?

The signal from the sending unit goes to the car's computers, it doesn't go directly to the gauge. The computers generate another signal that commands the gauge needles to move one way or another.
