It's not so much under-powered as unresponsive. When I would press the accelerator in a way that would make my previous cars jump, this thing would barely accelerate. Pushing deeper into the pedal resulted in a gradual increase in acceleration. The only way to make the thing really move was to stomp the accelerator to the floor; not something I want nor should have to do just to pull into traffic or when changing lanes to pass. Even when stomping the accelerator, there was an ever so slight delay. Maybe this is an automatic transmission thing; this was the first one I owned.
I can't remember which items I did and did not post about. Here's a brief summary:
-CEL, a/c not working due to bad ECM - several thousand dollar repair that took three tries; the second try, a Saab Original remanufactured part caused the car to completely die at highway speed. I was almost stranded on a two lane road in the middle of nowhere. I managed to get the old ECM back in, but it was a close call as I did not have the proper tools with me. I managed to pry up the engine cover enough to get my hands under there and used an adjustable wrench to loosen the four bolts.
-universal joint in the steering column. In 30 years of driving, I've never heard of this needing to be replaced, but the tech told me it was not uncommon on this model
-wheel bearing electronics causing failure of ABS, TCS and ESP, and caused odometer/fuel economy indicator/DTE to read incorrectly
-intermittent rear door locks, which require removal of the windows to repair
-driver side window and sun roof that would not close
-bad CV joint that made the car almost undriveable
-bad ignition coil
-others I've probably forgotten
All of this happened within about a year of purchasing. The ECM and the rear door locks I would say are major design flaws. If you try to use an engine computer as an engine heat sink, you shouldn't be surprised that it's going to have a limited lifespan. When I was searching the net for a solution to my CEL problem, I found plenty of people with similar issues. And the fact that I went through two ECMS to finally get one that worked is another clue.
