Hello,
I have success both with the key off and with it on. But I usually try it first with key off. On a really bad air in the system, like replacing the hydraulic unit, I have actually turned key on with pressure bleeder attached and pushed pedal 1/2 way down allowing the pump to force lots of fluid through the lines. Usually on a stubborn case in a Saab I will use as much as 1/2 gallon of fluid and really difficult ( i.e. Landrover for some reason) an entire gallon. So I guess that means about 1 pint for each circuit to bleed out the air but 1 quart on a worst case. Good Luck, Bernie
