I replaced my brakes on the 9th of July this year and so far have put approx 5500 miles on them.
This is what I see:
The rotors are marked with lines/rings from the pads but there's no lip on the edge of the rotor that indicates the pads are "eating" the rotors prematurely.
There is very little dust, if any, on the rims but running a finger across the pad will put a thin layer of dust on the finger tip. Normal I would guess.
After reading zyzzyx's post I now realize that the feel of the brakes is normal considering the materials used and the imprved performance ability of the new pads.
Highway braking (i.e. from high speeds and hard stops) feels great. There's plenty of "bite" on the brake and they feel confident. Driving around town, on the other hand, makes for softer brakes. I feel like I need to use more pedal pressure in order to stop. I'll try and get the brakes hot by riding them a little to see if this makes a difference.
My next step is to work on the back brakes. These are the ones from the previous owner and the thickness looks fine but the rotors have black spots and streaks on them from the pads.
