New battery every 2 - 3 years?

This week I installed a new Interstate MegaTron Plus battery in our '01 Sportwagon with a 2.3 engine. This is the third battery for this car. The first battery was replaced with a Saab/Interstate battery under warranty at 37 months and 38K and this week the battery failed without warning at 24 months and 33K. I parked the car after driving the car to work (40 miles of highway driving) and it failed to crank that evening.
We've had five Saabs and while I know that the 9000s are tough on batteries I've never had to replace batteries this often. Is is possible that the battery cover causes the battery to heat up more than a battery without the cover? Or is this car with many electrical systems just prone to eat batteries?
Our '91 9000 and '01 9-3 are driven the same way and don't seem to be tough on batteries. The 9-3 has the original battery and the 9000 needs a new battery every four years.
