Mate, I'm the ultimate tightarse when it comes to this sort of stuff! I did some of the 'normal' fiddles with my slightly failing SID and got the pixles sorted out (thanx Saabnet!), but still couldn't see some of it. Two out of the (from memory) six bulbs were blown.
My dealer wanted an unbelievable $20 a bulb for these things! Yeah, spend $40 on a SID that might not last anyway, not for me. I've seen that one of the online saab parts sites in the US lists the SID bulb/housing at about US$6 or 7 each, which I guess is OK, but postage to Australia is a killer for something so trivial.
The bulbs are held in a little plastic housing, and simply pop out on a 1/4 turn bayonet style fitting. The bulb itself is not glued/bonded in any way to the housing, the 'legs' of the bulb just wrap around the housing to hold it in and when you install it they make contact with the board. Getting hold of exactly the right wattage bulb is not easy, I went through several electronics catalogs with no luck, so settled on something slightly lower wattage (I think it's 2W or something).
Total cost about $2. Sweeeeeet! :-)
Works fine, a bit dimmer than the others, but I can live with that - I put the dimmer ones on the buttons, there's four bulbs for the display and two for th buttons. If I were in the US I'd just buy the genuine bulbs. Once the SID is out of the dash it's like a 30 second job to change the bulbs.
POst again if you need more info, I'm here all the time.
Cheers
Steve
