I have a 2001 9-5 Aero. Except for what seems like lots of repairs, I love the car. I bought the car about 2 years ago used (no CPO), at around 40,000 miles. It currently has about 49,000 miles.

I started to hear a clicking noise coming from the engine (near the belts on the passenger side) so I brought the car to a dealer to check things out. They took a look and told me that yes, I'm experiencing the dreaded sludge problem.

I have some of the records from the previous owner. It looks like the oil was changed at 10K intervals, but ONLY 10K intervals. Luckily, Saab is "goodwilling" me because this does meet the required service level and is covering the cost of repairs.

So here's the question: After they get done cleaning things out, replacing the short block and who knows what else, should I hold on to the car?

On the one hand I could look at it and say, "At 50K, I now have a rebuilt engine that should be good as a new. It should last me longer than a car that didn't experience this problem at 50K." On the other hand I could look at it and say, "The car didn't have its oil changed as often as it should have. I don't know how good a job they did of really fixing things. I'm probably in for a lot of trouble down the road."

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
