Key Not Accepted but Starts Anyway

Got the 'Key Not Accepted' message for the first time today in my 2004 Aero. The car cranked anyway with no issue or other button pressing.
I've tried to read up on what could be wrong and tend to think maybe it's a reception issue with the ignition antenna ring (?).
I have several questions while I begin to troubleshoot what the issue is:
1. Does the antenna ring also serve as the receptor for the remote door lock/unlock? (I ask because remote range varies so much and at times have almost needed to be within two feet of the car to unlock the door. Other times I can be 20 feet away.)
2. Can other key chips interfere with the ignition antenna ring? (I happen to be using my gf's mob of keys today and there is a bmw key with a chip in it. I haven't gotten this error (yet) with my key which is not clustered with 100 other keys.)
3. Someone mentioned an ipod could cause interference. Is this possible? I just happened to be playing an ipod through the tape adapter just when this error occurred. I hadn't had an ipod in there before.
4. Is this more likely a bad remote battery or chip? (I have not gotten a 'low battery' message that I am aware of).
