Not that I necessarily believe the $52k figure, but, it does sound like the new 9-5 will be fitted more luxuriously to go after BMW + Mercedes... Real quality leather + other materials cost more + that might require a steep price increase. Some Saab drivers have noticed a decrease in materials quality (GM pinching pennies) vs the older cars (eg 900s + 9000s of the 1980/90s) and would welcome improvements (and would pay more for them).

Right now there is only a little to distinguish the 9-3 from the 9-5 (eg vs 2001). Maybe it is fair to increase the quasi-utilitarian / higher luxury gap between the cars?

But from a business perspective, imho, there is a huge market of Subaru buyers that is increasing rapidly. The values overlap with Saab customers is large, but most of them have not even sat in a Saab. Existing Saabs are much better in many respects + cost is in the same ballpark. At least for 9-3, it makes a lot of sense to have good basic quality, available AWD, and moderate pricing so it can compete. A lot of 9-5 owners here also bought them with utility in mind, with the same goals of someone buying a V70 or an Outback... There is a solid market for a largish, safe, fun, sportwagon that can haul! I'm repeating myself, but I see a lot more 95/V70/Outbacks around than A6 Avants (or BMW X6, which the new 9-5 may closely resemble?)... the cars sell for the practicality more than the luxury imho...

"However, if there is a $52K 9-5 coming in 2010, I'll buy one in 2013 for $27K."

and I'll buy one of the 2013 models for $12k in 2020 once all the bugs are worked out! (if Volvo doesn't have a "recharged" V70 out that is!)
