There are two schools of thought
1) by the book that GM publishes, suggesting minimal service intervals
2) proactive, at your comfort (expense) level
I find that following this BB intervals provides the most enjoyable experience. For example, the GM scheduled interval for an oil change is 5,000 miles for my model and year car. However, at 3,500 miles, the car begins to exhibit undesirable shutter and poor acceleration. A simple oil change corrects these symptoms. It exponentially replicates for filters and more important components - such as belts, pumps, pulleys, shocks, and electrical components.
So while the dealer may technically be correct, your opinion of the experience may differ. The majority of flames on SAAB occur when something goes bad, and the out-of-pocket cost is $1000 or more. With this in mind, a few hundred dollars spent in possibly early repairs are cheaper than the cost of shredding the belt on a hunch that it is going to make it until the next scheduled interval.
Now, you might make it, but will the dealer/mechanic cover the bet. Probably not. And that is why the bet on this board is to err on the side of caution. A penny saved is a penny earned, but a penny spent in caution is a penny spent on statistical inference.
