Interesting, for several reasons, but not unheard of...
Parts suppliers are the 'forgotten link' - GM, Chrysler, and Ford have been to DC looking for money. But as you are aware, it is most of the parts in a car that come from outside suppliers. As these guys get re-aligned, orders are submitted, and these orders are not always in sync with engineering and packaging departments. So, they make due. But, let us know if this is a long term issue.
We've seen 'SAAB' labeled products come and go. SAAB had been labeling everything for eternity; then GM selectively toggled between SAAB and GM; then SAAB, GM, and -insert EURO Division Here-. We've noticed that Saturn shares parts (at a discount - see posts on rotors) with SAAB. But SAAB and other manufacturers have sourced from the broader supplier market place for decades.
For example, my fuel sender unit failed (see a prev. post). NAPA stocked the component pump used in the sender unit - to the exact component number and specification. A few nuts and hoses later, I dropped the unit back in, and at 205k, it still hums fine.
GM/SAAB surely does not make the water pump. Hopefully, the dealer is being honest and supplying a pump that is just not fully packaged but comparable in every other aspect.
Please keep us posted about the longevity of this pump!
