My advice is to tell him to wait and or look around for a CPO saab. Things will go wrong and that CPO will be very nice to have. Of course it is still under factory warranty right now, but when it isn't, the CPO will help. Then, Saab will have to go through the CPO certification process on the car and then he can also really be sure that the car was checked out. I think it is worth it.
Others will say take the $1500 or whatever cost of the CPO, put it in a savings account and use that for repairs.
I think getting CPO is the best way to go.
With my 06 9-5 Sportcombi, have had the following repairs:
1. passenger speaker grill kept popping up (Which is common in heat), dealer fixed.
2. Had idle problems, turns out throttle body was bad. Dealer fixed.
3. Ignition was sticking when you would turn the car off, dealer fixed.
4. air filter stunk, dealer fixed
5. the little black plastic caps for the carpet on the rear hatch fall out(common), dealer replaced with some cadillac ones I believe which actually hold.
6. Car needed "shims" to do rear alignment (which i guess is common with these), after talking to Saab USA, they covered the cost of the shims ($250 or something ridiculous).
7. plastic in one of the wheels wells came loose, dealer fixed.
All little things, maybe you could fix this all yourself if you are into it, but if this starts popping up when the car is out of warranty, it will be nice to have CPO.
