Our three previous Saabs (including two 9-5's), had manual transmissions, like nearly all of the other vehicles my wife and I have owned over the past 40 years. However, our present 9-5, a 2009 Griffin Edition SportCombi, is an automatic, mainly because that's all that was available last July when we bought it. I was reluctant to go with an automatic, and input from this site was most helpful as we made our decision. Now, after 9 months and almost 8,000 miles, I thought I would offer some observations.

Pros: The automatic shifts smoothly, driving on snow and ice is probably a little easier with no clutch to operate, the car is easier to drive up on my Rhino Ramps, and, I am pleased to note, the car does not downshift on its own in order to maintain speed going up hills on the highway, as many other automatics we have driven were prone to do. Oh, and it's much easier to drive and drink coffee or talk on a cell phone at the same time!

Cons: The fuel mileage is clearly lower (about 10% less, I would estimate), the paddle shifters are in no way a substitute for a proper manual shifter, and the car, while plenty quick, is not as fast or as fun to drive as the 05 Aero it replaced.

We don't have traffic in North Dakota, so creeping along in bumper to bumper traffic, which gets a little tiring in a stick shift, is not a concern for us. Been there, haven't done that for 13 years.

The automatic is fine (and the car is terrific). but I certainly hope that when it comes time for a new 9-5, Saab will still offer a manual transmission option for those of us who prefer to shift our own gears.
