I'm not going to get sucked into this pointless argument. I think anyone should report any failure of a vehicle when in motion to NHTSA. Once NHTSA has the data they can sort it out as being fluke, owner error, defect, etc. The fact that an owner might have avoided the problem isn't relevant once the problem happens. Almost any problem could be avoided if someone did something differently. NHTSA’s statistical analysis will sort that out. They need the data and can for the most part get it only from owners. They now get some from the manufacturers/dealers, but I questions how honest that reporting really is. The problem is asymmetrical because defects cost manufacturers a lot of money.
