I used a friend's X3 for a week last year and I have to say that anything more than going down to the corner shop and back was disappointing. Harsh suspension - even on relatively smooth roads, handling was marginal, even given its higher center of gravity. The engine was OK, but the fuel economy was pretty poor for a small SUV (mixed driving 17 mpg). From an aesthetic standpoint, in my opinion, it is one of the uglier BMWs (along with the 6 series). The proportions are poor and it does not improve, regardless of the angle.
BMW have recently redesigned the X3, making it almost as large as the old X5. They have tried to address the design elements that kept it from being a big seller. Time will tell if it succeeds. IMHO no replacement for a 9-3 Aero SC XWD.
